pathology service

The importance of reliable and accurate blood pathology is essential to define the health and fitness of our patients.

We have provided such a service for many years but have relied upon external pathology laboratories for results which are delivered the next day.

Our lab can provide your pet with many facilities.

All results are available within 30 minutes.

Belmont Veterinary Pathology
In the year 2007 we installed the Idexx Vet Test and Lasercyte with the electrolyte analyzer, we now have state of the art machines capable of delivering a full blood diagnostic screen within 15 minutes of collection. It provides great time and money savings for our many clients who travel a long distance. Instead of returning home and often back to the surgery the next day to pick-up medication, results will be available after only a short time. Diagnosis and treatment are made on the initial visit within no need to return the next day. Greyhound clients and breeders will particularly appreciate this feature. We offer the majority of blood profiles in the clinic, however for more specialized testing samples are sent away to external labs.

We have also invested in 2008 - the Mini Vidas from Biomereux   which can ana lyse blood Progesterone and Thyroid levels especially critical in the greyhound and in the bitch to find her optimum time for mating.

Diagnostic Profiles
Diagnostic Health Profile
This is a profile we run to determine and define disease states and organ function if your pet is sick. It is usually combined with a haematology.

Haematology
Haematology assess the blood cells. White blood cells which respond to different kinds of infection and red blood cells in case of anaemia and dehydration.

Preventive Profiles
Preanesthetic Profile
The health and safety of your pet is our foremost concern. Your pet cannot describe symptoms to let us know what might be wrong. Blood chemistry tests provide an inside look at your pet’s vital organs especially the liver and the kidneys. These must function well to rid the body of medications used during anaesthesia. Depending on results we may adjust the dose or type of anaesthesia used or advise delaying surgery.

Determine the full health status of your patient

  • Modify your anaesthetic protocols
  • Provide baseline data for future visits
  • Identify abnormalities and potential health risks
  • Provide peace of mind to your clients and staff

Pre-anaesthetic Profile Plus
This blood test like the pre-anaesthetic profile tests the liver and kidneys and also counts the white and red bloods cells, the white blood cells can give us an idea if the body has an infection and the red blood cells carry oxygen.

Senior Blood Profile
A blood test for looking at early detection of disease consisting of – a blood biochemistry looking mat liver and kidney function, T4 (thyroid test) and urine test to assess kidney function and screen for diabetes and bladder stones. read more

Performance Profiles
Greyhound PCV
(1) Simple spin down to detect anaemia and dehydration.

Haematology Profile
(2) Determines haemoglobin, PCV, White blood cells and differential. Assess anaemia, infection, stress and cell haemoglobin concentration.
Differential white cell count allows diagnosis of likely viral or bacterial infection and whether it is chronic or acute. It allows assessment of the immune status.

Performance Biochemistry
(3) Evaluates how well the organs are functioning - efficiency of liver, kidneys and muscle recovery. Pinpoint infection, toxins or stress are damaging the organs.
Combine (2) and (3) for a full greyhound or Equine Performance Profile.

Greyhound Performance Packages

  • Ideally after breaking in or at the time of form reversal
  • Full performance screen
  • Greyhound performance profile
  • Urinalysis
  • Faecal test
  • Full performance screen

Breeder Pathology Services
Bacterial cultures and senility (SWAB)
A vaginal swab should be taken with the first two days of the season commencement to determine the presence of infection. This is recommended for the protection of both the stud dog and the bitch.

Progesterone Assay
Is essential in the breeding management of the bitch to ensure mating when eggs are present and available for fertilization. A progesterone test will determine this point of ovulation and eliminate the major cause of a missed conception-improper timing of mating.

Semen Evaluation
To assess preparedness for mating or suitability for freezing. You should never mate your bitch to a stud dog without knowing the quality of the semen.

Thyroid Test
Thyroid Function Test. T4 determinations are particularly useful in the diagnosis of hyperthyroid cats (increased appetite with weight loss) and hypothyroid greyhounds (loss of stamina, intermittent diarrhoea and weight variation). T4’s can now be run within 20 minutes of sampling.

Parasite Control
Faecal Tests
Essential despite regular worming. Some wormers might not remove all worms. Environmental pick-up of worm eggs can be high in humid weather-regular checks recommended.

Parvo/Corona Virus Testing
A faecal test to detect Parvo Virus and Corona Virus a life threatening gastroenteritis condition in puppies. Heartworm Testing.

Heartworm Testing
We use the most accurate antigen heartworm test-result in 6 minutes.

Giardia Testing

CPL testing

Additional tests available
Urinalysis
It is good preventative medicine to determine abnormalities before they develop into major illnesses.
We assess urine

  • Chemically
  • Crystal presence
  • Concentration

The first urination in the morning provides the best sample. Urinary crystals are becoming more prevalent with domestic pets and today's commercial pet diets.
Early detection may prevent the crystals joining to form stones.

Skin Scraping
A invaluable tool with animals with skin problems. We use a blade to scrape a thin layer of skin from a lesion and exam it under a microscope looking for Mange mite and Demodex mites.

Fine Needle Aspirate ( FNA)It is very common for older pets to get lumps, most of the time we can’t tell whether a lump is nasty or not just by looking at it. A small sample of cells from the lump is examined under a microscope. This can give a clue as to whether the lump needs surgical removal.

Feline Viral diseases
Feline Aids (FIV) and leukaemia (FeLV) are both becoming more common in Australia. FIV is now reported to effect up to 20% cats in urban areas. Both FIV and FeLV are insidious diseases that weaken the cats immune system and make it prone to other illnesses. Cats that fight are particularly prone to FIV. There are now vaccinations available against these diseases. But cats should be tested prior to vaccination.
Inhouse ELISA testing provides results in 15mins.

Inhouse Cortisol Testing
We can perform a number of tests for adrenal function to detect ad monitor Cushing’s disease in dogs, these test usually require hospitalisation for the day.

Serial blood Glucose (Glucose Curve)
Used to monitor diabetic treatment and the patient is hospitalised for the day and bloods test are run every two hours.
