Frozen semen Facts and Figures

Since 1995 Belmont Veterinary Hospital has been a centre associated with the technology of the Camelot Farms Semen Preservation System.

We are part of a growing network of Veterinarians worldwide using this pelleted semen technology.

With the granting of the first semen processing licence in New South Wales to our Hospital by the Greyhound Racing Authority in May 1999 it is timely to review some facts and figures about Frozen Semen.

Breeder Inclusions

  • Bitch preparation for frozen semen
  • Breeding & freezing semen regulations
  • Assisted natural breeding
  • 4 steps to breeding success

What are the advantages of freezing my dog’s semen?

  • Ability to line breed long after death from old age
  • Storage for usage at times when sire is fully booked
  • A practical insurance policy that you can call on when your dog becomes injured, incapacitated or when semen quality declines before old age secondary to a serious disease process
  • The advantage of a semen of a known quality for breeding rather than “hoping that it’s alright”
  • Option of puppy sale agreements whereby male pups from a litter are sold on the understanding that when of age semen can be collected and used for breeding if the said sold pup develops of sufficient quality
  • Such extent of usage is determined by negotiation and allows for early de-sexing of the male if the owners so desire whilst preserving some genes for breed purposes
  • Potential export market is available with some breeds

What do I need to do to freeze my dog’s semen?
For success with the Semen Preservation System a good quality sample is essential. If your dog is not breeding regularly then it may take several collections to obtain a sample of sufficient quality. In any case, until the dog is accustomed to being collected from regularly, the use of a teaser bitch often yields a better quality sample.
You need to check the regulations pertaining to frozen semen with your breed society to ensure all requirements are met and the resultant litter is registerable. A semen freeze will take at least two hours and an appointment is essential for this procedure. Dry ice must be acquired in advance to complete the freeze. The collected semen can be stored indefinitely without deterioration provided storage conditions remain constant - similar to a state of suspended animation.

I want to mate my bitch with frozen semen - What do I need to do?
Ensure the requirements of your breed society are met in full well before your bitch comes into season. This will ensure a smooth progression with no panic and a confidently registerable litter.

  • Vaginal swab to be taken as early as possible in the season
  • Progesterone testing is essential to determine optimum time of insemination. Adv first Progesterone Test - Day 8
  • Two to five tests may be necessary
  • Insemination-either vaginally or surgically-depends on the semen type and quality

A word about Progesterone Testing
If you are serious about getting pups from any mating-natural, AI, chilled or frozen semen, then it is essential to know the correct time for mating. The most accurate and reliable method of determining when eggs are present and ready for fertilisation is with a Progesterone test.
We are reluctant to perform any AI without the benefit of a progesterone test and it is a waste of your money to do such a breeding without being sure the timing is correct, to maximise your chances of a successful mating as well as maintaining litter size. A 95% conception rate is achievable with progesterone monitoring of the season. Improper timing of mating is a major cause of so-called infertility and small litter size.

What is a Split-oestrus?
The season progresses normally and progesterone levels start to rise, but they may “hang” or even reduce. Ovulation does not occur at the expected time as suggested by behaviour. Mate her when you think she’s right and you are unlikely to get pups. Ovulation usually occurs rapidly 3-6 days after the initial progesterone rise and unless your are following this with regular progesterone tests then you are likely to miss a split oestrus.
What do I need to do to get my bitch tested?
One test will not predict the precise time of ovulation. A progesterone test will tell you if your bitch has ovulated but often more than one test is necessary to determine this point. The first test is usually done on day 10 (or earlier if the bitch is a known difficult breeder day 7 is good to establish a baseline). If she hasn’t ovulated a re-test is usually recommended in 2-3 days which many need to be repeated until ovulation occurs.

Greyhound Racing Authority - regulations reviewed
Freezing semen
Before insemination we require transfer of ownership papers.
Confirmation that the GRA has approved the Sire and allocated an ID.
Form FSI4 to be lodged with each collection and a fee paid to the Greyhound Racing Authority.

Breeding with Frozen semen
Registered owner must produce the bitch or authority provided at the time of insemination. The bitch must be registered with a member of ANZGA.
Registration certificate must be produced and verified.
After insemination, all forms must be posted to GR and HR. Fees to apply

Assisted Natural Breeding
Even if you don’t become involved in frozen semen, by applying the same principles so important for success with these advanced techniques, your natural mating's will benefit in both conception rates and litter size. The four steps to breeding success are aimed at you taking control of your next breeding and minimising the causes of a missed conception.

  • Prepare (Vaginal Swab)
  • Premate (Progesterone test)
  • Checkmate (Ensure semen of sufficient quality & quantity)
  • Inseminate

Follow these steps and 95% conception rates are achievable. Miss any one and you introduce an unknown which makes it difficult to investigate possible causes of a missed conception at a later stage.
It is more economical to plan the breeding and maximised your chances of a successful mating, rather than have your bitch miss and try to work out why later. With so many variables it is often not possible to find a particular reason for a missed conception.

Save the cost of travel & save time!
Shipping bitches to stud dogs can be a costly and frustrating process. It can cause stress to the bitch which can affect her reproductive cycle. A missed breeding is one which is lost forever in her reproductive life. The only purpose of breeding is to have puppies. Every precaution should be taken to ensure that goal. Now you can breed to the stud dog of your choice, no matter where in the country he may be.

The Fours Steps to Breeding Success
Vaginal culture & sensitivity - and appropriate antibiotics if required.
Ovulation - timing by Progesterone testing to determine correct time of mating.
A recheck progesterone will determine that the bitch is not having a split oestrus and may need to be breed again.
While you were waiting for her to ovulate, the stud owner is most anxious for you to keep them informed as how the bitch is coming along and to know when you think they will be shipping the semen. It is in their best interest to assist in every way to insure a healthy litter is whelped.
Checkmate - Semen examined from the stud dog to ensure sufficient normal sperm are present. Sperm numbers decrease in summer heat, whilst immature sperm increase if under stress or not collected for a while.
Inseminate - By either vaginal AI or by surgical AI

This breeder information from Belmont Veterinary Hospital provides an outline of our approaches to the steps required for successful breeding.
Further information is available from our staff and at times we have copies of past seminar notes which review the methods of Camelot Farms in greater detail.

Surgical AI - What is needed
Transfer of ownership from the semen stud dog owner.
