Frozen semen storage
Frozen semen is stored in large liquid nitrogen cryo tanks. Semen is shipped ( transported) using a special container called a dry shipper.
We currently have minimal space available for storing frozen semen long term.
Belmont Veterinary Hospital has no liability for any deterioration or loss of condition of frozen semen whilst it is stored or transported in our care.
At you discretion we would recommend semen insurance. Discuss with your insurance provider your individual needs.
Why Progesterone Test ?
If you are serious about getting
pups from any mating-natural or frozen semen,
then it is essential to know the correct time for mating.
The most accurate and reliable method of determining when
eggs are present and ready for fertilisation is with a Progesterone
test. we have the Mini Vidas in-house lab machine and results are available within 45 minutes
We are reluctant to perform any AI without the benefit of
a progesterone test and it is a waste of your money to do
such a breeding without being sure the timing is correct,
to maximise your chances of a successful mating as well as
maintaining litter size. A higher conception rate is achievable
with progesterone monitoring of the season. Improper timing
of mating is a major cause of so-called infertility and small
litter size.
One test will not predict the precise time of ovulation. A
progesterone test will tell you if your bitch has ovulated
but often more than one test is necessary to determine this
point. The first test is usually done on day 8 (or earlier
if the bitch is a known difficult breeder). If she hasn’t ovulated a re-test is
usually recommended in 2-3 days which many need to be repeated
until ovulation occurs.
What
is a Split-oestrus?
The season progresses normally
and progesterone levels start to rise, but they may “hang”
or even reduce. Ovulation does not occur at the expected time
as suggested by behaviour. Mate her when you think she’s right
and you are unlikely to get pups. Ovulation usually occurs
rapidly 3-6 days after the initial progesterone rise and unless
your are following this with regular progesterone tests then
you are likely to miss a split oestrus.

Semen transfer -
Shipment of semen to BVH - preferably 2 weeks before implantation. Transporting semen in the 11th hour is not

transfer of ownership papers of the semen..F10
Bitch requirements
Ownership papers and or letter from owner releasing bitch for insemination to trainer/breeder.
- Day 1-2 Vaginal swab to be taken as early as possible in
the season. Antibiotics may be required.

time of insemination. Two to five tests may be necessary

Assisted
Natural Breeding
Even if you don’t become involved in frozen semen, by applying
the same principles so important for success with these advanced
techniques, your natural mating's will benefit in both conception
rates and litter size. These steps to breeding success
are aimed at you taking control of your next breeding and
minimizing the causes of a missed conception.
Follow these steps and 95% conception
rates are achievable. Miss any one and you introduce an unknown
which makes it difficult to investigate possible causes of
a missed conception at a later stage.
It is more economical to plan the breeding and maximise your
chances of a successful mating, rather than have your bitch
miss and try to work out why later. With so many variables
it is often not possible to find a particular reason for a
missed conception.
